Airtel and Idea Users Receive Aadhar Card Verification SMS
   Jun 02, 2017 07:44 PM

Earlier in March, India based mobile companies were issued a directive from the Department of Telecom for verifying all mobile phone users through Aadhar card. Telecom operators including Airtel and Idea have already started sending SMSes to their customers asking them to link their mobile numbers and verify it with Aadhar card.

Message display at operator stores
Some of the companies have started displaying messages at their stores in order to inform users. A message at one of the Airtel stores read as “Link your Aadhaar card to you number now to stay active! As per the Government of India, this is mandatory to enjoy continued services.” There was a previously set deadline by DoT that by February 6, 2018 all the companies are expected to complete the verification and linking process with Aadhar card.

It was stated in one of the Government notices that this was an effective process established to ensure identity verification and the addresses of all the mobile phone subscribers. “In the near future, and more particularly within one year from today, a similar verification will be completed, in case of existing subscribers” said the statement.
According to the notice sent by DoT to the telecom operators, if Aadhar card verification and linking is not met by any particular subscriber, then the connection will be cut down by the operator.

Airtel and Idea have started informing their users with the following instructions.
-    After receiving the SMS, visit the nearest retail store of your network.
-    Carry Aadhar card and phone number and provide the details to the person at the store.
-    A verification code will be sent by the store assistant on your number.
-    Confirm the verification code to the store assistant.
-    A finger-print verification will then be asked.
-    Within 24 hours you will receive a final verification SMS. Reply to it with ‘Y’
-    The phone number gets linked to Aadhar card.

This process was set in motion after the Supreme Court in February ordered that all phone numbers should be verified. The court did not specify the use of Aadhar card. However, the Government decided to use Aadhar card for the verification. Aadhar card has also been made mandatory for filing Income Tax returns and for PAN card application. The Aadhar card will also have to be linked to the PAN card.
