Lately most of the India based telecom operators have introduced minimum recharge for prepaid connections and this is seen as a concern for the subscribers who are not very happy with the idea of having a minimum recharge in order to keep their incoming and outgoing calls functional. One the most prominent reasons for making such a move was to increase the average revenue per user (ARPU) and to dismiss non-paying customers. However, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has also issued notices to the telecom operators directing them to not disconnect services of any subscriber without sending SMS intimation. Tata Docomo has also recently joined the league of such telecom operators by introducing a minimum recharge pack.
Tata Docomo Releases Minimum Recharge Plan
In response to the extreme data tariff competition, some of the incumbent telecom operators have either restricted their prepaid plans or replaced them with minimum recharge packs. Tata Docomo has also removed its prepaid top up plans and replaced them with minimum recharges of INR 35 and INR 65. In order to continue with the existing service, Tata Docomo subscribers will now have to get a minimum recharge of INR 35. Tata Docomo has also introduced INR 23 recharge with 28 days of validity.
Other Telecom Operators
Just a few weeks back, Airtel and Vodafone Idea have removed talk time plans from their range of offerings. These operators are currently providing only combo plans with minimum recharge so that subscriber’s account is maintained. Although with this move, all the companies aim to improve their customer base and discontinue the non-paying subscribers, the response from consumers was not very positive as many of them complained about the abrupt disconnection of services inspite of having a sufficient account balance.
TRAI later directed the operators to communicate to the subscribers about the disconnection of their service and also provide them the available options and methods to select available plans or minimum recharges through their existing account balance. The authority also informed them that unless SMSes are sent to the subscribers their services cannot be discontinued.
